What are vocational assessments?

Vocational assessments are personalised evaluations that help determine your ability to return to work, identify new job options, and assess future earning capacity following an injury.

Our assessments can help you:

  • understand what work options are realistic for you
  • identify transferable skills and interests
  • navigate barriers to returning to work
  • make informed decisions about your career future
  • ensure you and ACC have a clear, fair picture of your work capacity and earning potential.

Services we offer

We provide a full range of ACC-funded vocational assessments, including:

Initial occupational assessment

At your foundational assessment, your work history, skills, interests and current medical restrictions are evaluated. We help you to determine what types of roles may be suitable for you now or in the future.

Vocational Independence Occupational Assessment (VIOA)

This deeper assessment helps ACC determine whether you can return to work independently. It considers your medical condition, functional ability and the vocational goals needed to establish vocational independence.

Career assessments

We explore your transferable skills, strengths and interests to identify career options that are both achievable and fulfilling. These assessments are helpful for people considering a new direction after injury. Loss of potential earnings (LOPE) assessment

This detailed evaluation is used by ACC to assess the long-term financial impact of your injury. Your LOPE report helps figure out your potential income loss if you can’t return to your previous employment or career pathway.
